BLOG TOUR AND GIVEAWAY: THE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST BY HOLLY BLACK #bookishWISHES

PictureTHE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST ~~~ Published by Indigo on 5 February 2015 Hardback at £10.99 and ebook at £5.99
Today I’m celebrating the UK launch of Holly Black’s new book, The Darkest Part of the Forest and the lovely folk at Indigo have granted me the honorary power of Fairy Godmother with a giveaway for you. See my #bookishWISHES below for details on how to enter.

IN THE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST, YOU MUST BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR...

I make no secret of my love of fairy tales and especially those that are delightfully dark, and Holly Black’s Fae of Fairfold will take all your ideas of happily ever after and turn them on their heads. I absolutely LOVED this book when I read it, it captures everything that I could want a contemporary fairytale to be and each page had me completely under its spell.

Meet siblings Hazel and Ben who have grown up fighting their childhood monsters with a sword and a song.

What if the person sleeping in the glass coffin wasn't Snow White, but instead a horned boy? What if he was a tourist attraction and teenagers held their parties around him? What if you loved him, and your brother did too? What if one day he woke up?

Maybe you’re the Knight of this tale…but you’re not so sure you deserve to be.

With love, longing, shifting loyalties; secrets and betrayal; what is enough to protect a magic village in a world obsessed with ordinary and the extraordinary?

My #bookishWISHES are as follows:

WISH 1: THE FILM OF THE BOOK

Usually I find it hard to picture a specific actor in a role, but this was not the case with The Darkest Part of the Forest. Immediately I knew that if anyone was going to play the horned Prince Severin in the film, it simply HAD to be Chris Colfer. With elfin features, knowing eyes and a feral, dark sense of justice, Prince Severin enchants the twins even in his sleep. Chris already has the sharp features and elf like ears, and a wicked sense of humour. Anyone who wanted him to be cast as Peter Pan will get that same sense of puckishness in the role of Severin. Furthermore, Chris has written his very own fairytale retellings in The Land of Stories series, so magic is already on his mind! Please join me in my one woman Cast Chris Colfer Campaign. (Once a film is on its way…)

So taken was I with this casting that I got…a little carried away in creating the Pinterest board to venture further into The Darkest Part of the Forest.

WISH 2: LGBTQ* FAIRYTALES

There are some truly fantastic YA fairytale retellings out there but I’d always love to see more, especially if they take traditional tales and flip them on their head. Give me a Cinderella in love with a Huntress like Malinda Lo, or a transgender Mulan as wished for by Zoe Marriott. What if the bookish boy fell in love with a beastly Prince? Or the girl trapped in the tower loved both her female and male suitors. I believe everyone deserves a happily ever after…or the chance to make a few mistakes and try to counter a curse or two. Maybe Aladdin hopped on his magic carpet and flew away with Prince Eric (with Ariel and Aurora embroidering matching monograms on to their wedding accruements.) Whatever it is, I'd love to see more books embrace diversity and where better to do so than in places where wishes come true?

WISH 3: BELLE'S LIBRARY

If (like me) you grew up dreaming of one day having your own sliding ladder and an entire castle room dedicated to book shelves as far as the eye can see, then you probably watched Belle looking awestruck in animation. My third wish is that the Save The Libraries campaigns get more support from the general public and the government, as a thank you to hard working librarians who provide such an important resource.

HOW TO WIN A COPY OF THE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST  #bookishWISHES

Now it’s your turn.

Send me your answer to either of the questions below in comments or on twitter with the tag #bookishWISHES

1.) Who would you cast as your Prince or Princess in the film of the story of your life? As well as a copy of the book, I'll add the winner's suggestion to my THE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST Pinterest board here.

2.) Tell me which story couples you’d mash up for your fairytale retelling: eg Little Red Riding Hood and Little Miss Muffet!

3.) For a bonus point, ask your local library to order a copy of the book for their shelves and enjoy browsing their selection of carefully chosen books.

I will pick the winner on Friday the 13th (could be your lucky day?) and look forward to all your #bookishWISHES
